Show notes:
Welcome to Episode 2.24 of Your Biz, Your Rules. In this show, we are going to be talking about transforming the way that you see your peers. Because believe me when I say it can have a huge impact on the way you see not just yourself, but also your business and how you value yourself in your business too.
I want to make this episode a little bit interactive. So go ahead and grab a notebook, grab a journal, open a note on your phone, something where you can write down responses to these questions.
You might want to hit pause as I ask these questions just to give yourself a little bit of time to go as deep as you need to.
Who are your peers?
- Who are your peers? When I say “your peers”, who comes to mind? Whose faces pop up? Whose names do you hear? Who is it that you consider to be your peers?
- What are the qualities or maybe the experiences that they’ve had that make you feel like these people, specifically are your peers? You might want to go through these names one at a time and just note down next to them what is it that makes this person your peer? Maybe it’s that you are the same age? Maybe it’s that you live in the same place? Maybe it’s that you have taken the same courses? Maybe it’s that you’re friends?
They’re not your peers…
Newsflash friends, these people. They’re not your peers. If we’re going to be deep, if we’re going to be realistic here, your peer is someone who does what you do.
Your peer is someone who does what you do.
So what is it that you do? Are you a coach? Are you a healer? Are you a service provider? Are you a mother? What is it that you do? How would you define yourself?
Whatever comes to mind is perfect!
Ask yourself: Who else does that? If you are a self-love coach, who else is a self-love coach? If you are a Reiki Master, who else is a Reiki Master? If you are a graphic designer who else is a graphic designer?
These are your peers.
And I can imagine that you’re feeling a bit of a contraction right now. Because I don’t doubt for a second that when I asked you who else does that big names came to mind and so you’re feeling this desire to contract a pullback. Lean into that and ask yourself, what is it that makes you feel like these people aren’t on your level? Why don’t you think you’re as good as them? Why do you think that they have something you don’t?
Get specific here – this is where the rubber hits the road. You have just identified some serious flaws in your self-image, in the way that you see yourself, your work, your business, and your mission.
The distinction between who you think your peers are, and who they actually are, says a lot about how you see yourself and your business.
So dig in, start excavating. This is the next thing for you to work on. Because if you constantly see yourself as less than all of these people who clearly do what you do, then you can’t be surprised when your audience choose to invest in them and not you. So instead of thinking about strategies for how to make more money, instead of pouring all of your time and energy into your next marketing project, or creating your next offer, spend a moment thinking about this. Spend a moment looking at where you are devaluing yourself and what you do.
It may take you a long time to get to the bottom of this, it may take you minutes, but you won’t know until you start making that effort. And believe me when I say the impact it will have on how you feel day to day, on your ability to show up for yourself, for your followers, for your clients will be next level.
The difference that will make to your competence to your ability to ask for what you want, stand in your power, own your voice, and say exactly what you need to say without offering 100 disclaimers or subtly dismissing yourself before you even started.
Just go with it.
Try it.
And tell me how it goes for you. Jump into my DMs and share how this experience was for you. Did you find it empowering? Did you find it challenging? Let me know.
