It’s no secret that I’ve been caught in the morning routine spiral more than once or twice – I’ve read the books, I’ve listened to the podcasts – I’ve given it a really good bash!

After much trial and error, I’ve come to a very clear conclusion: a new morning routine is not the thing that will suddenly make me successful.

In this episode, I’m sharing what I’ve found and what might help you too.

The key takeaways:

💛 A new morning routine won’t suddenly make you really successful. Especially if it means waking up earlier and getting less sleep.

💛 Towards the start of this year, when I was doing all of my planning and dreaming up what 2020 was going to look like for me, I started journaling on this topic and had a sudden “ah-ha!” moment. I realised that a morning routine was not the key, a night-time routine was the key!

💛 I wanted to create a ritual where I could wind down at the end of the day and get a proper amount of sleep. If I could get a good night’s sleep, I would wake up with the motivation and energy to have a great day!

I designed my night-time routine by asking myself three questions:

  • What is going to help my brain slow down?
  • What is going to make this feel like a treat?
  • What will actually help me get more rest?

I’m going to share my answers to these questions so you can get an idea of the kinds of things that can form your new night-time ritual.

What is going to help my brain slow down?

For me, this is reading! In particular, reading fiction (and not a business book that is going to get my brain going again). I also love having low lighting when I’m doing this.

What is going to make this feel like a treat?

Clean bedding, cosy blankets, and an essential oils diffuser – need I say more?

What will actually help me get more rest?

For me, this is about making this ritual a habit. So I set an alarm at 9 pm to remind me that it’s time for bed and my night-time routine.

Another thing that helps me get more rest is taking magnesium.

Finally, I have a no-screens rule! That means no TV, no laptop, no phone.

Think about designing your own night-time routine using these three questions:

  • What is going to help my brain slow down?
  • What is going to make this feel like a treat?
  • What will actually help me get more rest?
